The ONI Denim 270 “Kase” revisits one of ONI’s most distinctive fabric concepts, originally developed years ago and now reintroduced in a new silhouette. Rooted in traditional Japanese dyeing techniques yet unmistakably modern in execution, this denim reflects ONI’s ongoing commitment to pushing texture, depth, and natural indigo expression beyond conventional limits.

This fabric is inspired by “Kase-zome” (hank dyeing), a traditional method once widely used in Japan, where cotton yarns were dyed by hand before weaving. In classic kase-zome, yarns are fully penetrated by dye, resulting in deep color but limited fading potential. ONI, however, takes a radically different approach. Under the direction of Oishi-san, the brand combines the visual depth and irregularity of kase dyeing with a natural indigo rope-dyed, core-white structure, allowing the denim to age and fade dramatically over time.

The result is a 16oz ultra–low tension woven denim that displays extraordinary texture and dimensional color. The unevenness inherent to the kase-inspired dyeing creates layered indigo tones, while the rope-dyed core ensures high-contrast fading as the fabric breaks in. Over time, the jeans will evolve from deep, shadowy indigo into vibrant electric blues, with pronounced highlights that emphasize signature rain-like slub effect. Thicker and thinner yarns collide throughout the fabric, producing one of the most irregular and visually dynamic textiles ONI has ever created.

The ONI 270 is a new regular straight fit that sits perfectly between classic and contemporary. It features a mid to mid-high rise—slightly lower than the 266—paired with a clean, straight leg that is neither too wide nor too narrow. The silhouette offers comfortable room through the top block and thigh, flowing naturally to the hem for a balanced, timeless profile. This cut is ideal for those who want a traditional straight jean with modern proportions and everyday versatility.

Construction is finished with ONI’s uncompromising attention to detail. The jeans feature custom copper buttons, heavy-duty pocket bags, and a vegetable-tanned horsehide leather patch. The iconic ONI Kabuki selvedge, woven with orange, green, and black yarns, references the curtains of traditional Japanese Kabuki theatre and serves as a visual signature of ONI’s most expressive fabrics.

Fit Notes: These jeans have a standard sizing. We recommend choosing your usual size. However, as always, we recommend checking the size chart first to find your perfect size. The fabric is unsanforized, but the jeans have been one-washed, so no further shrinkage is expected. The waist will experience the typical stretching seen in ONI denim due to the low tension weave, although not as much as the secret denim. Expect approximately 1 inches of stretching.
