Meet the newest evolution of ONI’s textured denim: the Bumpy Denim series, now available in four exclusive overdye colorways — Kusaki (Green), Murasaki (Purple), Ōudo (Golden Yellow), and Kuro (Black).
Inspired by the spirit of ONI’s iconic experimental fabrics, Bumpy Denim pushes texture to a new level. The fabric is woven at extremely low tension, creating a dramatic landscape of irregular slub and “rain-like” streaking that feels dynamic and almost organic. Though reminiscent of ONI’s past innovations, this denim stands on its own with a unique depth and an unexpectedly soft hand for a 17oz fabric.
Each pair undergoes a second, heavy overdye bath applied after weaving — a process that builds layered color and enhances the denim’s natural highs and lows. When overdyeing unsanforized (loomstate) denim, controlling shrinkage and tone becomes incredibly challenging, making these pieces especially limited and difficult to reproduce. Both warp and weft will fade with wear, revealing subtle variations beneath the overdye and developing a natural patina similar to traditional yarn-dyed jeans.
This fabric sits within ONI’s realm of ultra-slubby denim — chaotic, tactile, and visually powerful. The surface shows clusters of dense, uneven slub that cascade across the denim like heavy rainfall, giving every pair a distinctive character. Despite the weight, the hand feel is surprisingly soft, almost like a lighter denim.
The 277 fit lands between ONI’s 288 Regular Straight and 266 Relaxed Straight, leaning slightly toward the relaxed side. Due to the high-temperature overdye process, these jeans experience more shrinkage than usual, resulting in a rise that fits a bit lower than ONI’s standard straight cuts. Finishing details include original ONI donut buttons, punched copper rivets, and a genuine cowhide leather patch, all executed with the meticulous quality ONI is known for.
Fit Notes: During the overdye process, the Bumpy jeans shrank more than usual, so you should go one size up from your regular ONI size, or one size up from your usual jeans size. In any case, as always, we recommend checking the size chart carefully. The waist will experience the typical stretching seen in ONI denim due to the low tension weave, although not as much as the secret denim. Expect approximately 1 inches of stretching.
