Few fabrics in the world of Japanese denim carry the reputation of ONI’s Secret Denim. First introduced in 2012, it quickly reached cult status thanks to its extreme slub texture, unexpected softness, and striking fading potential—a fabric that feels as distinctive as it looks.

This version introduces a subtle yet impactful variation: a light brown weft that enriches the denim’s overall tone. Beneath its deep indigo surface lies a warmer, more nuanced character, adding depth and complexity that becomes more visible as the denim ages and fades.

Woven using 3.7 x 3.7 ultra-thick yarns from a proprietary blend of cottons, the fabric is produced on vintage shuttle looms at ultra–low tension. The result is a 20oz unsanforized denim with a rugged, irregular surface, full of slub, hairiness, and movement. The warp is rope-dyed using ONI’s secret indigo formula, giving the denim its signature tinted blue, while the colored weft subtly shifts the visual tone.

Despite its heavyweight construction, Secret Denim is known for its unique wearing experience. It starts with a substantial hand but quickly softens, developing into a fabric that many describe as surprisingly comfortable—almost sweatpant-like after consistent wear, without losing its bold texture and structure.

The 288 fit offers a clean and highly wearable silhouette. Sitting between ONI’s slimmer and wider cuts, it delivers a modern regular straight profile with enough room through the thigh and a straight leg down to the hem. The result is a balanced shape that works effortlessly with a wide range of footwear—from sneakers to boots—making it an ideal everyday option for those who want character without going overly wide.

Finished with ONI’s signature craftsmanship, the jeans feature custom copper buttons, reinforced bar tacks, and a vegetable-tanned leather patch that will develop a rich patina over time. Durable pocket bags and a special edition flasher underline the limited nature of this release, while the iconic Kabuki selvedge ID completes the piece with a distinctive heritage detail. 

Fit Notes: This model fits true to size for ONI, meaning the tagged size closely matches the actual waist measurement. Compared to most global American brands, you will typically take the same size or possibly one size down depending on your preferred fit. The denim is unsanforized but has been one-washed, so no shrinkage is expected. Thanks to ONI’s signature ultra–low tension weave, the fabric will stretch significantly in the waist—typically up to 1.5–2 inches with regular wear. That said, we don’t recommend sizing down aggressively, as it may compromise both comfort and the intended fit.
