Studio D'Artisan 5717 "Amami Dorozome" Boro Jacquard Shirt Brown

Blending centuries of island tradition with modern Japanese craftsmanship, Studio D’Artisan’s 5717 shirt is a deep dive into one of Japan’s most ancient dyeing techniques: Amami Dorozome, or mud dyeing. Rooted in the culture of Amami-Oshima for over 1,300 years, this rare process uses tannins extracted from the native Sharimbai (Japanese hawthorn) tree, followed by repeated immersion in mineral-rich mud fields formed by prehistoric sediment layers.

The result is a color that can't be replicated by synthetic dyes—an earthy, smoky brown tone that is soft, layered, and alive with natural depth.

The base fabric is a custom jacquard woven to mimic the patchwork aesthetic of traditional Boro textiles, using thick No. 6 yarns and various weaves to create texture and dimension. Each piece is individually dyed by hand, allowing the differences in weave to absorb the mud dye in unique ways, adding even more character to the final garment.

Subtle sashiko stitching throughout adds reinforcement and a nod to traditional repair techniques, while the artisanal imperfections and tonal richness speak to the power of nature and the heritage of the land.

More than just a shirt, this shirt is a living canvas of Japanese history, earth, and craftsmanship.

Fit Notes: Despite being a Japanese shirt, we find the sizing of SDA shirts to be more Western than Japanese. If you usually wear a size M in American shirts, you'll find a suitable fit with this shirt in size M. However, as always, we recommend consulting our size chart for the perfect fit.
