Studio D'Artisan D5732 13oz Kakishibu Denim Shirt
The Studio D’Artisan Kakishibu Denim Shirt is a striking example of how traditional Japanese dyeing culture can be reimagined through modern denim craftsmanship. Built around SDA’s pursuit of extreme texture and natural aging, this 13oz selvedge denim shirt uses hand-dyed kakishibu (persimmon tannin) warp yarns, creating an earthy, organic tone that deepens beautifully over time.
The fabric is dyed using the traditional Kasezome method, where yarns are dyed in small bundles rather than continuously rope-dyed. This painstaking technique produces natural color irregularities, depth, and subtle tonal variation that machine dyeing simply cannot replicate. As the kakishibu oxidizes with exposure to sunlight and air, the color gradually darkens and evolves, giving the shirt a living patina unique to each wearer.
Texture is pushed even further through Studio D’Artisan’s signature yarn selection. The warp combines No.6 slub and nep yarns, while the weft uses an aggressive No.5 super-slub yarn, resulting in a rugged, highly irregular surface packed with character. Woven at the limits of vintage shuttle looms, the denim feels substantial yet breathable, with a raw, tactile hand that softens and gains personality with wear.
A subtle nod to Japanese heritage appears in the custom selvedge ID inspired by “Kakinoha” (persimmon leaf) Sashiko motifs, connecting the garment to centuries of traditional dyeing culture. Construction remains true to classic workwear: double chest pockets, side gussets with exposed selvedge, and natural nut buttons that add warmth and authenticity.
Fit Notes: Despite being a Japanese shirt, we find that Studio D’Artisan sizing runs closer to Western measurements than typical Japanese brands. If you usually wear a size M in American shirts, a size 40 (M) in this shirt should fit well. However, as always, we recommend consulting our size chart to ensure the perfect fit.
